Aizkraukles Banka Continues Supporting a Latvian Sunday School in Saint Petersburg

December 3, 2007 / Banking

On April 7th, a Latvian sunday school opened at the Consulate-General of the Republic of Latvia in Saint Petersburg. The School was supported financially by the Secretariat of the Special Assignments Minister for Social Integration and Aizkraukles Banka.

The school has worked for two terms now, and in October the bank offered its financial support to the school again and contributed to invitation of art teachers from Latvia: actors, musicians, artists and poets.

Currently, 80 children from the Latvian diaspora aged between 3 and 16 years attend the school on a regular basis. Classes are held two or three times a week. Several groups will be set up taking into account the children’s age and their command of the Latvian language, because some pupils know just a few words in Latvian.

The major tasks and areas of the school’s activities are the preservation and development of the Latvian language, Latvian culture and national customs in the Latvian diaspora of Saint Petersburg, as well as in the local community.
